Here's an update on Nate from the past two emails he sent--January 22 & 29, 2018:

January 22:

"It was cooler this week, but there still was lots of humidity. I am getting tired of going to bed wet cause I just cant sleep in it anyway....I miss the snow a lot. I always loved it."

"I love listening to accordion music, and I think a genre I love is cumbia, so you can google it.  There are lots of ice cream bikes here instead of ice cream trucks and I think its genius.  We also suffer from spaced power outages here, so we couldn’t watch the thing with President Nelson.  Also lots of dumpster divers."

Nate's new companion is Elder Calle from Ecuador.  Nate is finding out that having a native speaking companion can have its challenges.  This will be an experience that will give him some growth.

January 29:

Peter and I had asked Nate if he had any new investigators in Las Delicias, and he wrote, "We don't have lots of new investigators."  We also asked him about his mission president (President Allred), and he said, "The president is good.  A very willing person.  I meet with him for an interview every transfer."

Kami shared the following from Nate's email to her:

"First off, I gave a talk yesterday, and I need to thank you for asking about my current favorite scripture last week cause it made me go back to check.  The one I tried to remember was actually Alma 29:5, but the most recent one I’d marked that I really liked from that moment was Alma 42:15.  So I gave my talk around that scripture, specifically Alma 42:12-15."

"Our freezer was a cave so I boiled water and used the whole pan to melt a hole in it.  That was exciting."

"Oh, this is kinda big news.  I killed 10 cockroaches this week.  Elder Calle killed one, and only after I commanded him to do it.  Last Tuesday I killed 7 before 7:30.  They were living in my winter boots.  Tell me that doesn’t make you cringe.  I burned all their bodies out of spite."

"Without mountains (that I miss), the clouds move really fast."

Here are the scriptures Nate referred to above:

Alma 29:5:
Yea, and I know that good and evil have come before all men; he that knoweth not good from evil is blameless; but he that knoweth good and evil, to him it is given according to his desires, whether he desireth good or evil, life or death, joy or remorse of conscience.

Alma 42:12-15:
12 And now, there was no means to reclaim men from this fallen state, which man had brought upon himself because of his own disobedience;

13 Therefore, according to justice, the plan of redemption could not be brought about, only on conditions of repentance of men in this probationary state, yea, this preparatory state; for except it were for these conditions, mercy could not take effect except it should destroy the work of justice.  Now the work of justice could not be destroyed; if so, God would cease to be God.

14 And thus we see that all mankind were fallen, and they were in the grasp of justice; yea, the justice of God, which consigned them forever to be cut off from his presence.

15 And now, the plan of mercy could not be brought about except an atonement should be made; therefore God himself atoneth for the sins of the world, to bring about the plan of mercy, to appease the demands of justice, that God might be a perfect, just God, and a merciful God also.
